I'm originally from China. I attended my undergraduate studies there. I came to University of Washington for my PhD Major in Physics. I actually did my post doc in Europe, so I stayed for about a year and a half in France and England. Then I came back and did my second PhD in Information System. As you probably recall that I really like to cook. I cook for myself, I really enjoy so hopefully I have more time to do that. Other than that, I like reading especially history books and I also enjoy watching movies especially the ones which has historical relevance.
I'd be interested in the role that information technology is playing in business studies especially nowadays that there are so many interesting problems that are related to the emergence of new technologies. Currently, our group is working on a few research project especially in the area of sharing economy. So that is actually covering not just transportation but some other aspects as well. For example one of the interesting project we're doing is about kitchen sharing. People actually would be able to leverage the resources and their cooking expertise to help others. Another big area is FinTech. I've been working on topics such as P2P Lending, supply chain, finance and your mobile pay and your crowdfunding. Some of the topics related to those areas. Traditionally we have been working on many communities where it's a different focus. For example on healthcare which is actually there to help patients feel better and also some other topics like with charity and so on. In general, I think those topics are pretty interesting to work on and it really relevant suggestions we can make to the decision makers and platform owners and so on. We are very excited about this project. Most of them are data driven. Some are analytical type of models. Again, it's a very interesting time to work on this research project and so we are very excited about it.
This is something I also told my student that they should pay attention to the technology advancement especially you're following industry trend, right? The thing about information system is that we are not short of interesting topic to work on if you keep eye on what's going on in the industry. Many of the research ideas basically came from your reading of, for example, tech journals and just follow where the industry is going and what new technologies are there. The first question obviously would be to see how we can examine the impact of the technologies but also that we need to provide feedback loop to see how we can contribute to the acknowledgment of technologies from the initial point of view because many technologies would actually be designed to help out the users and customers. It would be good to provide very good prospective to cover the technology from the users point of view. I've been very fortunate to have a good group of very good student and also collaborators and then some more stuff and I think I get informed research ideas. Obviously, this is a very good sources of where the ideas would come from. One thing about your second question whether they would be worth pursuing, I will say that most project would be and then because now they are providing some of the curiosity from academic point of view. I think that is worth pursuing but sometimes you may not get exactly what you want. I think that's also the fun part, right? You always gets surprised and then you get to see something different from your original idea.
