story. I was 17 years old. I'm the youngest of four boys of my family. On the first adventure out of the house, I knew I wanted to make films. Oh, I knew California was the place to go and being very independent, very athletic and driven. I like to selling and I got accepted, and that was the beginning of my journey. I was ecstatic gash over the moon that I got into my school of choice. But that feeling actually left three years into my time. There you sail a short story. I just didn't get into the film major, based on my lack of connections and bearing Liza a story in itself. But it really opened up my eyes that you must persevere and I did, and I says, Darn it, I'm gonna get my throne degree no matter where it is. A tely sta not used L. A. I'm going to go to a local school, and I went to Cal State Northridge, where I graduated with a degree in radio television film with an emphasis and film production. By the way, I funded my education 100% so I actually spent more time in my education not least five years because I needed to work and paying my way. So actually, it was a Cal State Northridge that I first got an acting bug. Believe it or not, people were asking me to be in their student productions and films. And, you know, I just started taking acting classes and it really kicked in, and it brought someone who was more introverted into a more extroverted light really opened me up, which was a great introduction to who I really waas. And it was a great experience for me, and it was with an acting that I learned that acting is reacting. It really clicked in that listening was going to be a key and a valuable a resource for me in life. So, you know, after kicking around Hollywood for about 20 years, you know, I realized, and I got a lot of rejection, you know, it really built my character. When people say no to you, you persevere, and I did, and I continued, regardless of whether I got the acting gig or not, it was just, I continued on, just like I did with my education from U. C. L. A. to Cal State Northridge. I got my film today, Uh, but while I was acting, I had to make a career of making money, which is a lack of active. Um, I became a bartender at night, and that again was another instance where my listening abilities really paid off. Being a bartender, you know, I listened to my customers. I gave them advice and my tips showed it. I really had customer service and attention at all times to meeting that. That was another valuable thing that I knew was going to take me far on what I wanted to do. Um, after I realized it was time to get a real job and give up the Hollywood life, I thought going into sales was gonna be a great idea. I actually loved sense. It was something that I felt was in inherent in my abilities. So I took a job with a value added reseller selling software and technology I t services and I got to learn about all the new technology, how to be a good salesperson. Ask the right questions and, of course, listening for paint points. After a couple of years of doing that, my employer got sold out, and I was starting to look for a new job on at that point. That's where a recruiter recruited me, and the Catalyst group reached out to me and said They tied. We've got a position for you We want you to interview for a senior sales manager role in Atlanta. They flew me out to Atlanta. It was all day interview, and it was an amazing experience for me. I ended up interviewing with eight different people an hour. The interview each hour had a new person for Harris, and they all have the same questions. And it was interesting. It was at that time I had wished they'd done a panel so that we could have knocked it out in one hour. Uh, nevertheless, you don't always get what you want. You deal with the situation. I answered the same questions eight times. Yeah, it was a great experience for me, but I learned to that two heads of the company were pitting me against each other, and it was a no win situation for me. I didn't get the job. But the recruiter, like McCandlish, heard just great reviews about me and said Todd, I've got to meet you. He flew me out to Ohio. Oh, and he showed me, You know, what he was doing as a recruiter. And it just rang true to me. And he mentored me. And for 10 years, I worked with McCandless Group. Now I'm currently employed with before search. It's wonderful.
from cradle to grave, which means I not only do business development and bring in new clients, I negotiate fees. I secure offi agreements. I discussed job descriptions thoroughly with my clients and understand their pain points again. Good listening required. Source. My candidates I conduct and schedule energies. I present candidates of middles to do debriefs with clients and candidates and along the way up to negotiating job office. Like during that time. Management is critical in a role like this, as I'm constantly being pulled in different directions. You know, having a daily plan is critical knowing which hours to call to make your his death setting interviews, Indeed, briefs and managing your client's needs and sourcing candidates. Fortunately for me, I live in I work in the home office, and I'm very fortunate in that respect, you know, living in California, especially Southern California. Quality of life means a lot, and to me it's an ideal situation. Rather than traveling maybe an hour and our half each way to work that affords me a good life. It affords me the opportunity to work longer, which I do. Um, it's, you know, it's something that I find is is valuable and and by the way, it keeps me centered. And I'm focused working in a home environment. However, it's not for everyone. I mean, you know, there's a lot of people out there that once they work in a home environment, forget it. The phone, the refrigerator outside for a walk are hearing things. They're distracted very easily in my situation. Unfortunate because I'm very disciplined and focused. I was raised by a Marine s. Oh, you know, it came naturally for me. So it's easy for me to work 9 to 12 hour days and sometimes work for 45 hours without even taking a break because I'm in the zone. Oh, so yeah, yeah. So I was just gonna just get
customer relationship management tool is Creeley, but I used bullhorn that used top echelon, Big biller like you, Salesforce and a few others. But for me it seems like relate is the tool that really works best with organizing my clients and candidates and keeping me on tests. We use a lot of different technology, but I use Hoovers quite a bit for diving deep into companies. Learning through the competitors are in such faras record recruiting sources. I you know, I post on many different job boards, too many to name, but I do focus on the boards that are most relevant. A Sfar is the ideal tool firming. It is a recruiter, Lincoln by far. One thing recruiters is just the best, you know, having been on on its site since its inception. You know, I'm connected to tens of millions of people, literally. I threw out the U. S in the world. You think about it. We've come a long way since the days of picking up a phone and looking in a telephone book. You know, now you could connect to the world and as such, cash place folks and Singapore in the U. K. Australia Mexico, just to name a few. But obviously my strength, like in the US And, you know, I have the attitude that there isn't anyone I can't recruit for. You know, I really take that that attitude seriously. And I and I welcome the challenge when somebody says, Can you find me this person that I've been looking for for six months? Um, I would say you know my suggestions. All students today, we need to get on Lincoln. Put together a great profile as if it's your resume. Put together a great linked in profile picture that's professional, not you sitting at the bar with the drinking. I trust me when I say hiring managers will look a linked in profiles. So the sooner you do that and get on that even while you're in school, the better. I would like to, if you don't mind. Take a just a short story about this subject about preparing yourself, getting students to be seen. I mean, it involves my my nephew, Adam Markowitz. She received his B s and structural engineering from UCSD. He got his M s and astronautical engineering from USC. For six years. He worked in the aerospace industry worked on rocket engines for NASA and the space shuttle main engine. And he had quite an entrepreneurial mindset where he came up with an idea for students to put their portfolio of work where they can showcase their achievements to prospective employers and, you know, just different approaches. Just marketing yourself with the Standard resident. So Adam decided to leave his great job in airspace. He created this prototype social networking platform, this company he called Portfolio and Long Story. Short. After being accepted into the Evil Nexus accelerated program in San Diego, securing seed money, he successfully built his company to a point where many. It's not all that you see. California schools, colleges, community colleges, Cal State's were all using portfolio as a means for students to sign onto when they get into school. He built it nationwide that the help of his brother, Troy, was very successful. They were off persevering and became truly successful, where just recently his company merged with a large educational technology company on. So that's the short story of it that's called, you know, being being driven, having the passion with an idea of being able to implement. It's one thing to have an idea. It's a whole another story just to put it out there and make it happen. So you know, people build his dreams and, you know, and it's important that we prepare ourselves and students for the their career entry school. But getting back to for a second I'm not calling our company. Resource is, I wanted to mention that gold before search partners.
