I'm originally from sunshine state Florida. I've traveled quite a bit throughout the US - just some other countries - but I've only ever called Florida and Utah home. Activities that I really enjoy - I moved out here for the skiing. So I do still work at the deer valley in the weekends just to get my ski pass. Well, probably not as often as I'd like to. I also enjoy food. I love trying new restaurants. I just tried White Horse this weekend. This is actually my home desk area. I really enjoy crafting and reading. I love reading. I'm reading a few really good books right now. It's probably one of the most important hobbies I have. This year I'm reading a lot of books on leadership as I just got the promotion into a manager of pricing at Overstock. I took the lead role in July and I just want to be able to find new ways to connect with my team and make sure I am communicating effectively, helping them set objectives and just mentoring them in the best way possible. Right now I'm reading a book called Finding Happiness At Work, and it almost sounds like it would be just for myself but it's actually for the team as well. It talks about finding happiness from a leadership position for your team and yourself.
We have four pricing teams and I'm over three of them. My teams do various things in checking the records pricing for the on site to processing new price changes and doing the analytics for the business. If someone has a question with competitiveness, we might help them look into it or if they want to know should I say almost like pricing algorithm, we'll help them with that as well. Some of the technologies we use are Python. We automate all of our algorithms in Python. We use SQL everyday. We are our own data wranglers. No one gives us the data set. We have to get it ourselves and make sure everything's accurate with it before we can get analysis of it. We also are starting to break into machine learning a little bit. I have a couple of team members who are really leading the way for that. I did a little bit my major with you guys learning it, but now to actually executed requires a lot more study, more in depth practice. That's what we're currently working on.
My favorite thing about my job is probably the culture. We have a very freedom kind of environment. You have to of course get your work done, but there's no one like managing. You can go flexible in the sense that sometimes I come in like at ten maybe, so I get to stay until six or seven. It's flexible in that way. I get to work from home when I absolutely need to. The company is always doing events for us where they like try to make the environment better I guess. Over the holiday break, we did like a smores party, we did watching movies while you work in the auditorium, we had social events in the Nucleus which is like our central cafe in the middle of the building where we got to like interact with our other teammates and other teams that we don't get to interact with every single day. That was very nice. I think it's always a challenge learning something new, and that's constantly what we're doing because if you're too stagnant you're not going to progress in technology in general. And so, when I first started, I brushed on SQL in my program, but I didn't really use it well enough to be able to get my own data set and make sure that I'm pulling everything from database. That's my first challenge as an intern. Then I got into Python. I had to learn a little bit about that and learn how to automate processes and stuff. And now it's gonna be machine learning. It's just always taking the next challenge and learning them. It's just constant learning.
