Thanks for the invitation to this great project and I'm really excited to be a part of this. For the first question, I was originally born in the east part of China and throughout the years I've been in many places. In the U.S., I have been in Philadelphia first doing my graduate school and then after that I come to Phoenix. Outside of work, I used to do photography when I was in graduate school. After I got this job, it seems much more work than I can handle so I sort of stopped doing photography and recently I put some time into a new hobby which is mechanical keyboard. So now, I have a bunch of mechanical keyboards. I assembled them. It sort of helps me enjoy typing as much as I do because I do a lot of those in writing papers so it has sort of added a utility beside the hobby.
So, do you mean the courses I teach or courses that are taught in the program by others as well? Yeah. So, we we have two undergraduate programs. So, I teach in undergraduate program. So, the undergraduate programs we have are both the information systems degree and also the business analytics degree. So, the Information Systems degree is I would say more technical-focused. So, we start from system analysis and design and then SQL databases and then we also have more technical programming like C#, we also have elective of Java and then we have the capstone project. So, it's more technically focused. For the business analytics, obviously I would say it's a little bit less technically focused. It's primarily focused on the data analyses. For example, we have introduction to business data analytics which is an overview of different methods and then we have database as well and after that we have data warehouse, Python programming and then there's the capstone project. So, yeah, these are the undergraduate programs. For graduate programs, we have MSBA and MSIM. MSIM is Master of Science in Information Management, our profile of students are those working professionals who have many years of experience but in Master of Science in Business Analytics, we have many international students from India or from China. They have one or two years of work experience or just came here right after their undergraduate studies.
My primary research interest is in broadly the digital platforms. So, for example, my dissertation is focused on online labor platforms -- those platforms that facility the matching of workers and employers in web-based platforms like for example freelancer.com. Upwork is also another platform in the United States. So, a major research project we are currently working on is how those platforms can implement sort of IT features. I wanna say systems, but they are systems but more of the IT features. They can provide those features and those features can address issues from the buyer's side and also from the seller's side. For example, there are many different biases that prior work has identified in those platforms for work. The employers might sort of have bias towards hiring this type of people than other type of people. So, we're showing that enabling some features. For example, there's one feature that is monitoring feature. Monitoring is allowing employers to monitor the workers with very little effort. Basically, when the system is in place, the workers have to install the program and they will be taken random screenshots, their keystrokes will be recorded so the employers can observe them. So, the key idea is once the employers can observe them, they do not need to rely on some of heuristics, some sort of group-based characteristics. For example, which country does this person come from, is he female or male, these kind of heuristics to make hiring decisions. So, we also have a related project on communication systems. So, basically, the workers and employers now can communicate with each other prior to contract. We also find there's some effect, some sort of benefits of using these systems in reducing asymmetric information on these markets.
