so I'm gonna give you an example of sort of how I got to where I am today. Um, I was working in Houston, Uh, was 2000 and seven and a recruiter contacted me and said, you know, do you wanna work a twitter? And it was still very early. I was like, Yeah, you know, I'm happy. I'm happy with my job. And about two weeks later, I was like, You know what? Here's my resume. Let's see what happens about two weeks later, I hadn't heard back, so I I flew to San Francisco. I found Jack Dorsey cell phone number, and I texted him and said, I'm in San Francisco for no particular reason, but I know you have my resume on your desk. Can we? Can we have lunch? It was like, You know, we're kind of busy towards this week, but why don't you come in on Tuesday, come into the office and meet everybody? And I went in and it turned out to be a big interview on. I got the job right away. So that sort of creative approach to fighting jobs and being very proactive, eyes helpful, it's it's really variations of that on also networking. I'm looking for a job. Do you know anybody? And they ask all the people. And as you become more senior, you know more people, and that becomes a lot easier.
So I will first state that at small startups we have four employees. 4.5. Ah. Lot of times they will give you a fancy title. Uh, in lieu of a fancy salary S o, I, uh I do some sales work. I take care of a lot of the infrastructure, like, Oh, you know, who do we get? Network providers and and those sorts of things? Um, you know, I have I'm a director of me, right? I have no team. Um, I take care of a lot of you know how we package our software. How do we sell our software? How do we build our software and and those sorts of things? In theory, one day I would have a team of people and and direct them, but we're, you know, we're not there yet.my top priority is supporting the developers. Um, what? What do they need to get their job done? Um, the second one is managing our our budget on making sure we're not spending too much money and, you know, keeping track of that on a sort of weekly basis to make sure there's no big increase and spend on when you use cloud providers, that is a huge concern. You know, maybe somebody left the giant database up. You're like, why is my bill $8000 mawr this week? Um, and the third priority is, you know, making sure I'm happy making sure I've got a good work life balance that that I'm not putting in too much effort. Especially, you know, with Kobe, there's a lot of stress. Eso you know, it's taking a little bit mawr focus to make sure I'm doing well and performing well at work. Um, my work hours were absolutely, totally flexible. If I need to take tomorrow off, I would get in slack and be like I'm taking tomorrow off. Um, so it's, you know, very a lot. Since I'm working for home, I find 5 to 6 hours a day is about the same thing as eight hours in the office for productivity, primarily because I don't interact with people a lot, you know, way have, ah, short meeting everyday Onda. Lot of times I might not deal with anybody else on the team. Eso that helps you know productivity and have a lot of context which?
one of the big problems we have as a company. That is, of course, a huge concern of mine. It is a huge concern for every early stage startup is getting customers on. That's, you know, that's not just the CEO's job, you know, that's that's everybody, right? Because you have to have customers to have money, and you gotta have revenue to have a job. Um, a lot of that is, you know, I think for any company, right, you should be able to state what does our company do? What you know, what is our value proposition? And it's understanding your business and understanding your product and understanding the use cases. And a lot of people want to focus on Oh, you know, my job is just this little thing that I got hired for. You know, I write code, and sure that's your job. But you know, there are other bigger things that you need to be cognizant of, and those are the sorts of things that will help you get promoted in and will help you move up. Mhm
