It's an interesting story because today I work at a very large consulting accounting firm, and I got there because originally I am an accountant or at least that's how I started my career and I got there because I was always good at math and good at numbers. But I did not want to go into accounting because I thought it was boring. But I studied accounting and because I did that I was able to get my foot in the door with my company EY and once I got there even though I didn't really love accounting at first, I found out that what I thought about it really wasn't what I thought. I learned that it was much more about interacting with people and a really good variety of things to do every single day. So after working there for a while, I realized I really enjoyed the atmosphere and this environment, and since then I've made several career changes. So how I got to where I was today was just by being curious and taking a chance in several different roles and then that led to what ultimately is my job today, which is lead recruiting, for EY. I'm totally different from what I studied, but it's something that I really enjoy.
My job is a big job, it's a great job. I love it. But as a global recruiting leader, I am responsible for hiring every single person that joins our organization everywhere in the world, at every rank, for every job, so this year that means my team and I are responsible for hiring almost 100,000 people just this year, and that's like every year. So it's a big job and I would say, the decisions that I'm making and the responsibility is really about making sure that we have an excellent experience for people that are interested in joining us. You can think about when you apply for a job, even a part-time job, what you have to do is you have to fill in applications, you have to have a resume. What does the interview look like? What kind of questions you can ask? We certainly want to do our job and make sure that we are screening in the right way so we get the right people to join the firm. But I also have to make sure that people like you, people that are interested in the company have an enjoyable experience. Otherwise, you won't want to join, even if we want you to come and join. So those kinds of decisions on what kind of brand we have out in the market, how we're approaching talent, how we're approaching students and talent and candidates in the market and also what that experience looks like for them. Recently some of the major challenges for me are everyone's expecting some level of technology and automation, but in recruiting, that's a very personal undertaking. So how do I build in the technology in the speed while still making sure it's a very personal experience and that is the challenge we're currently working through right now.
We use a ton of tools, obviously the whole Microsoft suite of offices every single day Word, Excel, Advanced Excel, PowerPoint, etcetera. We're also using some of the more recent tools that that that Microsoft has introduced them. So office 360 where I have access to everything that I need, whether I'm at home or on the road on my mobile device and that's been a huge advantage for me and then collaboration tools like Microsoft teams, not only can I video chat and have conversations with vast number of teams, it's also a great way to collaborate with those teams. So sharing files and information, I'm with them in real-time and for my job tools like that which allow me to work whenever, wherever and on whatever platform I want are especially important because I have a truly global job so I work of people all over the world, all different time zones, so to have something that's convenient for that is really great. I think other networking tools like Skype or Zoom are also really critical in a job like mine and then this enterprise software. I'm in recruiting, so we use for applicant tracking, we also have software that we use for candid relationship management but for me, I would say two things are important. Number one, it's got to be able to be utilized across platforms, so whether you use your own Apple device or an Android device or whatever the case may be, it's got to be seamless. And then number two, it's got to be optimized for mobile, so much of what we do in business today is done on the road or not at a desktop or laptop. So the kind of tools that could be optimized. I mean, I think one of the great experiences that you have a student's like it's so easy to go in order something on Amazon, It's so easy to create a playlist in Spotify. That's the kind of ease of use is what employees expect from their employers as well.
