I'm originally from Singapore but now I am working in Hong Kong obviously from my affiliation and I've been here for twenty years so, this, in fact, is my first faculty job, you know, as a faculty. Both places actually are cosmopolitan and have very similar culture and norms. Hong Kong is a dynamic and vibrant place. I lived mostly in both of these places, although I do have some opportunity to travel, thanks to ICIS and various conferences such as Praxis and EC, NCs and so on. One of the things I enjoy is food, traveling, again you know due to all these conferences, I got a chance to travel which, probably would not have that much of opportunity, you know it's just a normal typical job. So I really enjoy being a researcher and educator. And you know I would just, I would like to welcome everyone to visit Hong Kong, you know for some great international food, Cantonese cuisine which emphasizes the freshness of ingredients and great taste.
So we currently have three bachelors programs, because ours is in the college of business so most of them are bachelors in Business and administration. So the first one is the BBA in global business system management, so this undergraduate program tends to train students to become management consultants to operate in global settings. So many of them end up as IT consultants, as management consultants, in some of those big firm. So, it's somewhat like elite program in that sense, we have a lot of very good students, mainly because one unique feature of this program is that our students they go for exchanges. So one of the exchanges in the US or Europe and another exchange will be in Mainland China or Greater China area, that also includes Taiwan and other places. So, this is one of the programs where you know we get really good students. Then there is more mainstream information systems program, which is called BBA in information management. So, within this program is three streams, one stream is information systems auditing, so people will still become the information system auditors and so on. And then there is a stream that is getting very popular because it's called a business intelligence and analytics, so obviously you know all people who are interested in data analytics, big data and so on, that will be the stream to be in, and then we have another one on social media and networks. So many of these are, depending on the specialization that they do, they end up in a very typical jobs, Information Systems related jobs, I think in banks, utilities firms, properties, logistics and so on. So those are the main, like industries in Hong Kong. And another popular program that we have is the marketing information management. Bobby teaches mainly those digital marketing tools and techniques, and the students who graduate will work in digital marketing jobs in firms such as in malls, in hotels and so on. This program will, unfortunately, be phased out very soon, not that there is no demand for it but because I think because the marketing department whom we partnered with, they also want to go into the digital marketing. So you know the collaboration will be ending soon and then, probably marketing department might want to start out some digital marketing programs as well. Then we also have introduced double majors, so that students can take major in any of the disciplines in the college of business. We have several disciplines like, accounting, economy, finance management, marketing management, management science which is the research operations management and then, of course, information system, so they can take like two of any combination of these disciplines. These are main undergraduate programs that we have. Besides these we also have graduate programs of course PhD, the local PhD, what we call the local PhD will be, you know, the PhD students and candidates will come over and apply to us directly, but we do have also a rather unique scheme which is joint, City Uni and one of the mainland university collaboration. PhD supervision, collaboration scheme in which we partner with another university in mainland China, so they will provide the students and that we will jointly supervise the students, so some of the pilots that we have in Mainland China includes USTC which is the University of Science and Technology China, Xian Jiaotang University, Nanjing university, Harbin University of Science and Technology etc. So, there are several universities that we partner with where we'll jointly supervise the PhD students. Then besides this, we also have some other postgraduate programs like masters of Business information systems. So this is mainly for non-IS professionals who want to know something about information systems and then we have EBKM, E-business and knowledge management for non-IS managers, so they want to have some information system knowledge and then we have those another program for information systems professional, who wants to become a manager, I mean picking up managerial positions and then we have another program with a computer science department, so this is joint partnership on the electronic commerce. So these are the main programs that we have at the undergraduate level as well as at postgraduate levels.I think I will say that probably we are one of the bigger information systems department you know at this peak we have over 30 of the faculty and staff members so, you know due to the good job market a lot of people move somewhat but you know we still have a pretty large number of faculty. So we are able to keep up any changes in this program.
I will say that generally speaking there wasn't any misconception, its just that I think to encourage the students usually we do have mix of female and male students so, there weren't any worries about diversity and things like that, and also in that sense we have like, as I mentioned, we cover the range of students like people who have IS knowledge or those people who do not have and so on so, it pretty much covers it. I think probably that we'll find some signal that yeah we are trying to be embracing different types of backgrounds of students. So how do we encourage students to apply for the programs, I think the typical promotional activities, like websites and so on. So for research I think one of the things that are helpful, we encourage our faculties to visit schools, visit their collaborators, in various schools and then they do some presentation of their papers, of the research that they do, and that probably gets students to be interested and then you know, some of the students decides to apply for our university, and then you know because of this joint PHD supervision collaboration with the mainland universities, we also have some of these students that is recommend by our partner universities, so that is another source of our students relating to the PhD programs. For the post graduate so the typical things that we do will be like promotional visits, like because nowadays many of our students are from Mainland China and some of our program leaders, they will visit schools in Mainland China and then do some promotional presentations. Beside this we also have this network of alumni, those had graduated from our program, they find that they are happy about this and you know like in mainland China, they have this social media called Wechat so, they' follow Wechat group they start to do some promotional activities their as well, so you know, a mix of physical as well as social media marketing in that sense, we do some promotion to encourage students to apply for our programs.
