so I actually can pinpoint to one incident that really shaped where I am today, which went back to when I was in college. I was feeling a little uncertain about what I wanted to do with my career, and I had a really great adviser who who at the time said, Look through the college catalog at the time, um, kind of dating myself. But it was an actual paper catalog that you could look through on. He said, Go ahead and circle everything that looks good to you on and then who knows? You end up with a major. And not only did I end up with a major, but also with a minor and those two things really good shape. Um what I ended up majoring in its war, which was public relations and corporate communications with a minor focusing on arts administration. Andi, I have to this day still been very interested in the arts and in nonprofits. Um, and so those two things got into PR. I'm one of the rare people who is what I went to school for, Although typically whatever you study in college, you're still goes really, really going to influence your career, and I'm no exception. So even though I did go into the arts, um, and into nonprofit, I do a lot in my current position in philanthropy and seeing how our corporation can help support the community. So it all kind of came together and then, you know, once I had that idea of what my major was going to be, it really was a pretty straightforward shot into going into internship and following that career path, and I stayed on that career path for my entire career.
So I am in charge of PR and corporate communications at my organization, which means that basically anything that people think about our company likely had to do with me. I help manage our social media feeds, so anything that is part of that strategy I interact with reporters and handle all of our internal communications. So the responsibility is really vary. And, uh, there's some things that when you work in this role, you're always going to be working on and some things that are really unique to individual positions. Eso One thing that I about the job is that there it's centered around communications. I love to talk to people. I love to interact with people like it, a lot of energy, of out of communicating with people and seeing people, even if it's just a video and, um so that's that's definitely a huge part of my job. And so writing is really important, and being able to find different ways to get people's attention to communicate is pretty important. And so in terms of you know what priorities are if you're looking into into this is a field, it is important to be a good communicator. on, but to have another buddies who have an understanding of what gets people to react on, what's in or heads of people so that you could make sure that the communications that you're sharing is going to be well received by them and is going to get them to do what you need them to do, which is either you don't pay attention or change something on bond. Another thing that we really handle on my team and I personally is around image. And so having an understanding of how Thio get a strategize around your image, know how you want to be seen and then identify the ways to to, uh, to build up that image. And there's many ways to have people. It's branding. People really do understand even people who don't go into marketing or PR understand, like personal branding. And so that's a big part of what that ISS Andi. I think that generally also used the three priorities. I think always being willing to you learn, and the open is really, really, really important because you may be working as a PR person for one client or another client. If you're working at an agency or you may go in house like I am on and you have Thio not just know a lot about PR and how to communicate, But you also have to know a lot about either your client or the company you're working for. I have to be as well versed in in all of our products and services as anyone else that the company, because I'm the one who is often sharing what's important about those products and services and trying to find new audiences for them on dso. You know, being open to learning about these things being open. This thing, I don't I don't understand it, but, you know, help me understand it, um, is a pretty important thing. And weekly hours That's a huge question. Just like any other service industry, you know, it's it really can vary if you're on the agency side might be billable and have certain billable hours that are expected of you. If you're in house, it could be just standing. But it is actually, You know, one thing that we pride ourselves on at this company is work life balance, especially now. And so it is. Uh, it's reasonable. Um, there are sometimes when things were really busy and I have to work longer hours. But I really have been able Thio have this really incredible professional career and and also, you know, have other things in my life that are important to me and without, without stressing out too much. It's a lot of it za lot and you learn very quickly to be incredibly efficient and prioritize things so that you can not, not too crazy.
So what? I'm really, uh, important thing is being a good writer being a good communicator on that comes across most often in writing, especially today. Whether that's an actual press release or press communication, or just an email or a social media post. And so really important thing is attention to detail. Understanding, good grammar, being really aware of typos, being willing. Thio, slow down. Take a look. You know, Did I Did I rush through this or are there mistakes here than any Onda really good approaches Thio always be open and always be learning. Finding someone partner at the at the company who's willing Thio read through the that second pair of eyes on Do the same thing is really, really horrible. But you know, even your excellent writer right now, you're always going to have a time where a communication is going to stump you. And so it's good to have a method Thio just being able to get into the zone, um, to be able to fully focus on the communication that needs to go out and thio not get too stuck on. I had a mentor of you to say, you know, don't fall in love with your writing Not could not get too stuck on one sentence or phrase and be upset if someone wants to cut. Um, it's it's mostly important. Thio be open to the editing to be open Thio, you know, always improving your community.
