um well, I graduated from Cal Poly Pomona, and I had a degree. I have a degree in a county. Um, they had an at the time I knew someone who worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena on and they had a amazing internship program. So I interned there. First I applied, and I got in there. And then once I graduated from college, they hired me on full time. So I negotiated contracts between, um, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. And you know, anyone that was going toe make anything for us, whether it's a parachute for Mars lander or a mortar tube for, um, some kind of cannon to shoot the parachute out of a very robust, uh, a wide variety of different things, eh? So I worked there for 10 years, and then I got married and had a baby, and my husband at the time was working at bio zero. He started the company from from scratch. It was just he and an engineer. Um, gosh, 17 years ago, and I was still working at JPL, and he was traveling back and forth from we lived at the time up in Santa Clarita, down to San Diego, and it just didn't make a lot of sense. So he asked, you know, Hey, would you want to come work at the company? You know, this is kind of what we're building, And do you wanna build it together and kind of, you know, get it to the next level. And I was hesitant at first. I really liked my job at JPL, and like the people that I work with, I like the environment. Um, but then at that point, it just didn't make a lot of sense. You know, It was it was just a lot of traveling on his side, and we had a small child. So we moved down to San Diego, and we continue continue to grow the company over the last. Now, I've been with the company 12 years. Over the past 12 years, we've we've built up the company from, you know, two people to now 50. So it's it's been it's been an interesting ride
definitely higher level. Um, decisions. Not so much the day to day decisions, but budgets, Um, large purchases, you know, need to be sent off on me by me. Um, large partnership agreements if we're gonna be entering in any kind of partnership with another company, Um, those definitely get signed off by me. Any kind of, uh, n d a get signed off by me. Overall structure of the company, Uh, new systems that were put into place for the overall running of the company. Definitely. I'm responsible for, um, basically just the overall operations of the company now, Um, yeah. And anything that has to really impact the overall company like it's not the day to day little things, but on the higher level. Because I can't be involved in every little decision that goes on, but definitely the bigger ones that have a bigger impact. Thio Bios era in the overall structure in running of the company. Absolutelyum, top three priorities for me. Um is number one getting getting our systems delivered to customers on time, being profitable and making sure that we're making a difference in the world? Um, those are definitely my top priorities. And you know, it is important Thio to us to have a really nice working environment. It's important that we you know, it's fun and people are engaged and they feel valued. You know, it's really important to us, and they are more than just people that worked at the company. They truly do care about them and their well being and the well being of them in there.Well, I'm in a different category because we're on the company. Um, so I I work a lot. I work constantly. Um, I don't know, 60 70 hours a week. I would guess I'm constantly on my phone. I'm constantly responding to emails. I'm constantly on the phone. Um, you know, we have partners in Japan, so I'll get phone calls it, you know, seven o'clock at night because it's their morning. Um, you know, we have a European arm of the company S O, you know, very early in the morning. For them is you know, I try to get in contact with them early my morning because they're, you know, eight or nine hours ahead, depending on daylight savings. Eso My day starts early and it runs late, and it's okay.
I'm cash. My biggest pain points, honestly, are, um you know, probably like everybody else. People problems, you know, It's just, um it's challenging to we have a great team. Um, but there's definitely, you know, sometimes we have, you know, about apple. Um, sometimes there's things that get missed, and they have an impact on the company. And so dealing with, um, those issues is not the best part of my job, But it's definitely things that I need Thio address. Um, let's see and approaches for effectively overcoming them. Um, you know, I did. I do have a coach. Um, and I'm I recognize that I'm not the most empathetic person. Um, excuses don't usually fly very well with me. I, uh and I know that. And I hold ah, high bar and I hold a high standard, and I want people to be held accountable, and they need to take accountability. And so, you know, there's been those air some personal challenges that I've had to deal with on working with a coach. I've gotten better. I'm not perfect, but I have definitely improved. Um, and you know, I mean, it's faras a specific examples. I mean, I'll give you an example. You know, I had someone working with us and they were a sales manager and he was having problems with his car and, you know, great, understand, you know, But then he didn't have a car. And as a salesperson, you need a car to go visit your customers. And so then he was taking one of our engineers to go visit his customers because he didn't have a car. And so, you know, it was just these kinds of things. And so I had to have a discussion with him and say, Look, now you're making your problem My problem, because now it's not just you that's leaving. It's also an engineer who has nothing to do with sales and what you're trying to accomplish. So I mean, my advice to most people is, you know, look, things happen in life. It's understandable you might not have a car. You might be able to get word to work with it, whatever it is. But I think the main, the main take away, is Don't make your problem somebody else's problem. And I've dealt with that, you know, several times. And, um, it's frustrating and It takes time away from what I'm trying to do and what I'm trying to accomplish and the goals that I need to achieve a CEO. So that's just one example of the the things that go on sometimes, but you have to deal with.
