Trying to do good

Epicodus is a vocational school for aspiring programmers. We teach students web and mobile development and help them find jobs. I bootstrapped the company and started Epicodus as the sole employee, responsible for building our curriculum, teaching our students, developing relationships with employers, and helping our alumni find jobs. I've grown the company to a dozen employees, trained over 1,000 students, and opened an office in a second state.

My school Epicodus was a founding member of CIRR, a group of coding schools that created a standard for measuring and reporting student employment outcomes. I proposed a framework of using multiple categories of outcomes that formed the basis for our standard. After the group's first data release, I led the work to form the non-profit, volunteered for the board of directors, and was elected as our first staff member. I created and implemented all of the organization's processes, including recruiting and onboarding new members, releasing data, and undergoing data audits.

I founded Impact Dialing to make it easier for volunteers and staff on political campaigns to call through their lists of target voters, supporters, and donors. With no experience in technology, startups, or business of any sort, I built a profitable company with 7-digit revenue and hundreds of millions of phone calls made.

I started field work as an organizer for No On 8, the campaign to keep same-sex marriage legal in California; became a field manager for Equality California, the organization that advocates for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Californians; and then became a field director for Keep Oakland Safe, a campaign to protect funding for community violence prevention programs. In all of these roles, I recruited volunteers by phone and in person; organized door, street, and phone outreach; managed volunteer teams; and developed volunteer leaders. I then consulted for several organizations to help them run programs evaluating the effectiveness of persuasion campaigns using randomized controlled trials.
